Your App, Their Data: Local-First with Evolu

Most apps store users’ data on a server and lend it back through an API. Local-first reverses that model: data lives on the user’s device first and remains under their control. The app works without a connection—and can outlive both its servers and the company behind it.
To bring this approach to Trezor Suite across web, desktop, and mobile, we used Evolu: local SQLite, CRDTs, and end-to-end encrypted synchronization through a blind relay.
But giving users ownership of their data does not remove complexity—it moves it. I will share what we learned about key management, schema evolution, deletion, migrations, and storage limits. You will leave with a practical checklist for deciding whether local-first fits your project—and understanding the trade-offs before you commit to it.
